Our Wedding Day - June 2, 1997

Yesterday we celebrated 16 years of marriage.  It was a great day, one of the best we’ve had in weeks.  We’ve come to realize that selling all your belongings and preparing to move to a foreign country is a little stressful. And a little stress consistently present over an extended period of time causes more than just a little tension between two people.  Over the past month we have had drag out fights over the most stupid things.  We always talk it out in the end but the time it takes away from us and the added stress it places on our relationship is ridiculous.

Yesterday during worship service I had an epiphany.  As we were standing, worshipping and praising God, my heart was so full of love for Allan that I had to ask myself why.  It may be a little sacrilegious to mentally stop praising God to ask such question, but I did it anyway.  He wasn’t doing anything for me or toward me.  He was standing right there next to me, lifting his hands in praise to God.  We weren’t focusing on each other.  We were both focusing on our awesome Creator, thanking Him for all He has done for us.  That is when it hit me.  When I am loving and praising God I am able to more fully love Allan.  It only took me 16 years to fully grasp God’s command to love Him first and then love others.

That is beautiful, Suzan! Thank you for sharing. Ephesians 1:17-21 is a great passage that I pray for myself and for others, and I pray this for you two as you embark on this amazing journey:
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.” Whew, so powerful!
